Hi,

Thanks for visiting my blog. Craigslist is great but there are a few things that you might want to be cautious about. We sell about ten or twelve cars a year so most of the time people pay us with hundred dollar bills. I bought a counterfeit detector pen at Office Depot which has saved us on two occasions. Now I use it on all the bills we take.

Other than that, make sure your ads have photos otherwise the response might not be a good as it should.

I always put my phone number in the ad and an email (I use the anonymous one Craigslist offers) because I am not always at the computer.

I seem to have the best luck listing furniture and stuff on Saturday morning at about 8am. If your town is big, your ad may only stay on the front page for an hour or so but we live in Reno and the ad will stay on the front page until about noon.

I try to think of every question a buyer might have like dimensions, color, size if applicable, whether or not I can help them load it in their vehicle or if they need to bring a helper, etc.

When I finally get a buyer that is interested in coming over, I always set an appointment and tell them I will only be home for a half hour after that so if they know I am not going to wait for them. We "sold" a stove 4 times before a buyer finally showed up and I got very tired of waiting for them when they said "I will come by sometime after work" and then never call or show up. Oh, and if you are giving it away for free, you will have more flakes than a snowstorm. It seems that free means they can call and ask a ton of questions, say they will be right over, then never show. By that time I already removed the ad and have to start over again.

I really like Craigslist and have had great success buying and selling stuff. I hope you are able to have good luck with this too.

Thanks again for visiting!

Ouch, this one hits close to home. We recently had 6 inches of floodwaters in our basement, so everything went into our garage. We are now going to follow your advice, take photos, and put a lot of items on Craigslist. What kind of experience have you had with selling items on Craigslist?
